Detroit — Michael Gonzalez had himself quite a day Friday.
Through the efforts of the New Jersey and Michigan chapters of the Make a Wish Foundation, Gonzalez, an 18-year-old from West New York, N.J, got to live his dream of meeting slugger Miguel Cabrera and getting a tryout with the Tigers.
Cabrera picked up Gonzalez at the Townsend Hotel in Birmingham and drove him to Comerica Park, where Gonzalez’s uniform, No. 7, was sitting in a locker next to Cabrera and Ian Kinsler.
Gonzalez was taken into an office by assistant general manager Al Avila and signed to a one-day contract. Then Gonzalez was put through a full big-league tryout.
A pitcher, Gonzalez played long toss with reliever Phil Coke, then threw a bullpen session under the guidance of pitching coach Jeff Jones. Gonzalez even took a turn in pregame batting practice.
The outing will be featured on a future “My Wish” segment on ESPN.
