A week after the world learned of Robin Williams’ death, David Letterman honored the late comedian with a lengthy tribute Monday night on “The Late Show.” Letterman talked about their 40-year friendship, which started at the Comedy Store in New York. Williams was a guest on the various incarnations of Letterman’s late-night show nearly 50 times. “If they knew Robin was on the show, the viewership would go up because they wanted to see Robin,” Letterman said. “Believe me that wasn’t just true of television, I believe that was true of the kind of guy he was. People were drawn to him because of this electricity, this whatever it was that he radiated that propelled him and powered him. Beyond being a very talented man and a good friend and a gentleman, I am sorry I, like everybody else, had no idea that the man was in pain and the man was suffering,” Letterman said at the end of the tribute, “but what a guy.”

It would mean a great deal to me if you would please refrain from taking photos or filming during the shows,” she wrote on her website. “I very much want to have contact with you as an audience, not with iPhones, iPads or cameras. I know it’s a lot to ask but it would allow us to all share in the experience together.” Her fall residency at the Eventim Apollo Hammersmith in London sold out in minutes.
