Dearborn Divine Child 49, Detroit Consortium 28

Friday's high school football roundup: Onside kick helps Divine Child roll

River Rouge — An onside kick early in the second half of the final game of the River Rouge Kickoff Classic between Dearborn Divine Child and Detroit Consortium proved to be pivotal as Divine Child used that to go on and win 49-28.

After scoring on its opening possession, Divine Child made the gutsy decision to attempt an onside kick and recovered. It then scored on its next two possessions and went up by as many as three touchdowns.

The first half provided lots of action.

Consortium called a timeout before its first offensive snap, which seemed to be a bad sign. That is until Cameron Lewis ran 43 yards on the first play from scrimmage.

It had no problem converting that big play into 73 total yards in five plays to go up 6-0 after just three minutes when Kryon Meyers ran in a 13-yard touchdown. It failed on the 2-point conversion.

Divine Child responded with its own five-play touchdown drive, which culminated with a 48-yard touchdown pass from Jimmy Seewald to Shane Fugate.

The two teams then exchanged touchdowns for the rest of the half, with Lewis scoring on a 1-yard run and a 67-yard kickoff return for Consortium and Seewald and David McCarty each running in a touchdown (1 and 10 yards) for Divine Child, which led 21-20 at halftime.

On their first possession of the second half, Seewald again connected with Fugate on a 44-yard touchdown pass. A successful QB sneak on a 2-point conversion attempt by Seewald gave Divine Child a 29-20 lead.

Divine Child then recovered an onside kick, and went down the field to score on Seewald’s third passing touchdown, a 7-yarder to Danny Blade.

Seewald finished 19-for-27 passing for 301 yards and three touchdowns. Fugate had five receptions for 147 yards and two touchdowns. McCarty added a 1-yard scoring run.

Consortium was led by Lewis, who had 145 yards on 12 carries and three touchdowns.

In the previous game, Detroit Westside Academy beat Detroit CMA, 40-12.
