Child, 5, hurt after being thrown from dirt bike in Macomb Township

Police expect charges to be filed against a Macomb Township man after a 5-year-old child sustained numerous injuries from being thrown off a dirt bike both were riding.

According to the Macomb County Sheriff’s Department, the 27-year-old man and the child were riding a KTM mini dirt bike about 3 p.m. Sunday between the sidewalk and road along Garfield north of Hall in Macomb Township. When the man rode over some hills, the child was thrown from the bike, Lt. John Michalke said in a press release.

A witness driving on Garfield told deputies the child flew off the bike after the man had done two or three jumps. The child was wearing a helmet, but it came off when the child flew off the motorcycle. She told deputies she thought the motorcycle ran over the child, according to Michalke, which a second witness confirmed.

The woman driver said she was going between 40 and 45 mph on Garfield and it appeared the motorcycle was driving at roughly the same speed when the accident occurred.

The child was taken to Henry Ford Hospital in Clinton Township and transferred to Children’s Hospital in Detroit.

The sheriff’s office did not say what the relationship was between the man and child.

Police are still investigating the incident and charges are likely, Michalke said.
