Pontiac— A 25-year-old Pontiac man told deputies someone tried to bushwhack him on Labor Day in a drive-by shooting while he was mowing his lawn.
According to Oakland County Sheriff's deputies, the incident occurred about 2 p.m. Monday, when the victim was pushing a lawnmower in a front lawn in the 200 block of Bassett. Neighbors reported the man had exchanged gunfire with someone in a van, which then sped away.
The victim told deputies a green or teal van pulled up and someone started shooting at him.
The man, who was not injured, told deputies he pulled his own handgun out and exchanged fire, hitting the van. It was not known if he wounded anyone in the incident. His own vehicle was struck by gunfire, deputies said.
The man said he did not know his attacker and reported a window in his vehicle had previously been broken, he believed by a niece. The man said he kept a pistol in his pocket because of recent threats toward him and his family, deputies said.
Evidence was collected at the scene and the matter remains under investigation.
