Detroit's early history in aviation

William E. Scripps, son of the founder of The Detroit News, was the first man in Michigan to own and fly an airplane. Here, he grabs the controls of a Burgess & Curtiss flying boat in 1910. It was built under Wright patents and was a duplicate of the original Wright brothers' plane.
