Hazen Pingree, Detroit's superstar mayor of the 1890s

Hazen S. Pingree, Detroit's mayor from 1889 to 1897, was nationally admired for his "Potato Patch" program to feed the poor. He led construction of the first public schools, public parks and free public baths in Detroit. He exposed corruption and got companies to lower the prices of utilities and street car rates.
