The Grand Army of the Republic in Michigan

A group of Union soldiers, their guns stacked, gather at Appomattox Court House, Va., in April 1865 for the surrender of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee to Ulysses S. Grant, the Union commander. The end of the Civil War sent hundreds of thousands of soldiers back to civilian life, many of them poor, jobless, sick or amputees.
