The life and death of Hudson's department store

The J.L. Hudson Company department store is shown in an undated photo taken shortly after its opening in 1911. Joseph Lowthian Hudson opened the store on Woodward, blocks away from what was then the city's commercial center on Jefferson Avenue. Only Hudson himself believed his new store would become the heart of Detroit.
