1968: A tumultous election year

Republican presidential nominee Richard Nixon raises his arms in victory after accepting his party's nomination at the Republican Convention in Miami, Aug. 8, 1968. Nixon won the general election in November, capping a tumultuous political year. At left is House Republican Leader Gerald Ford of Michigan, who became Nixon's vice president after Spiro Agnew's resignation in 1973, and went on to succeed Nixon as president when he resigned from office in 1974.
