Jefferson Avenue, Detroit's river road for centuries

Men in top hats ride in the American Express Co. Merchants' Dispatch wagon along Jefferson Avenue in the 1860s. The street was named in honor of President Thomas Jefferson. Today it remains Detroit's east-west backbone, following the Detroit River for nearly 64 miles, from 23 Mile in the northeast suburbs to Dixie Highway near Estral Beach, southwest of the city.
