Teen's lie about his past jeopardizes future with girl

Dear Abby: I am a 16-year-old guy in my sophomore year of high school. I am known as a friendly, outgoing guy who gets along with girls. My problem is, I used to be one of the biggest jerks who ever was. I was involved in fighting and other things I won't go into. But I turned my life around. - 11/07/2009

Don't give boss your cell phone number

Dear Abby: My boss wants my cell phone number for "work purposes." He has trouble with limits, and I am reluctant to give it to him. I don't want to receive text messages, unsolicited calls or contact outside of work. My private life is just that -- private. - 11/06/2009

The cold fact on colds is they're contagious

Dear Dr. Donohue: When can I expect to catch my annual cold? Midwinter? How long is a person with a cold infectious to others? I want to be responsible about not spreading colds, but I'm not sure my boss is happy with me taking time off for having one. It sounds like a wimpy excuse. How do I tell cold symptoms from more serious things, like the flu? - 11/06/2009

LDL cholesterol helps verify risk of heart attack

Dear Dr. Donohue: I am a 79-year-old female, 5 feet 2 inches tall and weigh 127 pounds. All my numbers are fine except for cholesterol, which is 151. My diet is low fat to no fat. I have nonfat yogurt every day. The last time my cholesterol was up, I cut out the yogurt and had oatmeal every day. My cholesterol went down to 145. My doctor wants me to take cholesterol medication. I would rather not. Is it the yogurt, or just my natural makeup that keeps my cholesterol high? - 11/05/2009

Grandpa's upset by lack of manners

Leaky valves don't always need treatment

Dear Dr. Donohue: I had been feeling slightly uncomfortable in my chest, especially in the morning after waking. I had an echocardiogram. The report reads: "a trace of mitral regurgitation; mild tricuspid regurgitation; pulmonic valve thin and pliable with normal motion; insignificant valvular hemodynamics; normal ejection fraction of 60 percent." Is this something to be concerned about? How are valves related to the heart? My study was "technically difficult." Why? I am 68 years old. - 11/04/2009

Don't forget batteries when changing the clocks

Dear Abby: As a fire officer, I have seen far too many families fall victim to accidental home fires. It is devastating to find out that a life could have been saved if someone had only taken that simple step of replacing a dead battery in a smoke alarm. Nearly 96 percent of American homes have at least one smoke alarm. But did you know that 19 percent of American homes lack a working smoke alarm because the batteries are missing or dead? - 10/31/2009

Multitasking daughter is driving toward a disaster

Dear Abby: My daughter insists that she's a "multitasker" -- too busy to telephone or text except when she's driving. It scares me to be in the passenger seat while she's talking on the phone or picking up toys the baby has dropped from his car seat. - 10/30/2009
