Ford Motor Co. said Wednesday its 2017 F-150 pickup’s fuel economy improved by one mile per gallon better than the outgoing model, thanks to a new EcoBoost engine and 10-speed transmission.
The 2017 4x2 truck will get 18 mpg in the city, 25 mpg on the highway and 21 mpg combined, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The 4x4 version will get 17 mpg city, 23 mpg highway and 20 mpg combined. Both versions are at least 1 mpg better in all categories than the 2016 F-150, while the 4x4’s combined rating is 2 mpg better.
The 2017 F-150 will be available in dealerships later this month with a 10-speed automatic transmission mated to a second-generation 3.5-liter V-6 EcoBoost engine starting at $30,630, including $1,195 destination charge. The new engine and transmission will be standard on Limited and Raptor models, and available as options on all other trim levels.
Ford introduced its 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine in 2009 and added it to the F-150 in 2011. The engine has been successful; 62 percent of F-150 sales in April had an EcoBoost engine, and the automaker will sell its one-millionth EcoBoost in an F-150 by July, Scott said.
The second-generation 3.5-liter will feature a number of firsts for Ford, including two fuel injection systems: direct injection and port fuel injection. The engine also includes new pistons, a new cylinder, new turbochargers and an electronically controlled wastegate.
The new engine will get 375 horsepower and produce 470 pound-feet of torque, 10 more horsepower and 50 more pound-feet of torque than the first-generation engine.
The 10-speed transmission was co-developed with Ford’s crosstown rival General Motors Co. Ford and GM announced the joint project in 2013. The companies are jointly developing a 10-speed that will be used in trucks and other rear-wheel-drive vehicles, as well as a nine-speed that will be used mostly on front-wheel-drive vehicles.
