This week Howes says the widening federal investigation into possible corruption at the United Auto Workers’ three national training centers in Detroit threatens to undermine the union’s credibility, starting with the working folks it claims to represent. Whatever comes of it all, the mere existence of the probe will reinforces the familiar narrative that union leaders are in their jobs to enrich themselves, not their members.
