Detroit’s DMK conquers ‘Empire’
Last week, we reported that native Detroiter Beth Griffith-Manley was a featured soloist on “Dancing with the Stars.” Well, this week, another trio of talented Motor City artists made it to national prime-time TV when the hot girl group known as DMK did a slamming performance on “Empire” Wednesday night.
After beating out thousands of other singers nationally for the opportunity to appear on the popular night time drama series, the girls showed up and showed out with a sizzling song appropriately called, “Fabulous,” because that’s exactly what they were. And the timing couldn’t have been more perfect. In addition to making their prime time television debut, they also just released their latest video, “Major,” for their self-titled EP, which is now available on iTunes. (The song, “Fabulous” can also be found on iTunes and on the “Empire” soundtrack).
DMK (who only go by their first names) is Damoli, 22, Melanee, 22 and and Kourtney, 21. They have been making music together for more than 12 years and have roots that run deep to Motown music. Kourtney’s grandfather is the late Levi Stubbs of the legendary Motown group The Four Tops, which has had a huge influence on the girls. They celebrated with a standing-room-only crowd on Wednesday night during a combination video release and watch party at Mo Better Blues in downtown Detroit.
“Detroit showed us major love” said Kourtney. “It felt great to get so much love and support from our city.”
‘Weddings, fashion, style’ on Jefferson
Glamour has come to Detroit in a big way since celebrity bridal expert Keasha Rigsby laid down roots here a couple months ago. Known internationally for her regular appearances on TLC’s “Say Yes to the Dress,” Keasha recently opened Beautiful Bridal with Keasha Rigsby in the elegant Bagley mansion on East Jefferson. Last week, she hosted a reception to thank Mayor Mike Duggan, who supported her endeavor with his Detroit Motor City Match Grant in which Beautiful Bridal received $50,000 to help launch their flagship store, which opened in February as the only bridal boutique in Detroit.
“I’m really diggin’ Mayor Mike Duggan for his support,” said Keasha, who moved here from New York. “We are making Detroit the destination for weddings, fashion, style and entrepreneurship. I’m here because of Detroit’s Motor City Grant and the exciting revitalization of this great city.”
This weekend, Atelier Pronovias will present a trunk show of its exclusive European bridal gowns, followed by Badgley Mischka on June 17 and 18, and then Limor Rosen on June 23 through 25. Beautiful Bridal with Keasha Rigsby is by appointment only.
Divine dining goes down Monday

Taking place at Bacco in Southfield, the night’s menu includes braised rabbit lasagnette, grilled lamb ribs, lamb sausage, braised cabbage, borlotti beans and ricotta lemon cheesecake for dessert. The cost is $75 per person (additional wine pairing is $40 per person). Call (248) 356-6600 for reservations. The evening is a prelude to DelSignore and Rigato’s pop-up dinner to be held in DelSignore’s hometown of Abruzzo, Italy, in September.
