None of the six Metro Detroit chefs and businesses named as semifinalists in the 2017 James Beard Foundation Awards advanced when the final nominees were announced Wednesday from Los Angeles.

Selden Standard’s Andy Hollyday, Nick Janutol of Forest and James Rigato of Mabel Gray were edged out by five Chicago chefs nominated for the Best Chefs: Great Lakes award, one of 10 chef categories separated by region. This was Hollyday’s third consecutive year being named a semifinalist.

Corktown’s Thai-inspired spot Katoi was the only Michigan business named a semifinalist in the “Best New Restaurant list. Of the 27 semifinalists in that category, five were named final nominees: two from San Francisco, two from New York and one from Washington, D.C.

(Katoi closed temporarily after being damaged in a fire last month, but will resurface on a pop-up basis inside restaurants around town, including Hazel Park’s Joebar later this month.)

Sister Pie owner Lisa Ludwinski also did not advance as a final nominee in the Outstanding Baker category.

Downtown cocktail lounge Standby was the sole local business listed as a semifinalist for Outstanding Bar Program. Final James Beard Award nominees status was given to Cure and Arnaud’s French 75 in New Orleans, Bar Argicole in San Francisco, Dead Rabbit in New York City and Clyde Common in Portland, Oregon.

Started in 1986, the foundation is named after a champion of American cuisine, the late James Beard. The awards were established in 1990 to recognize culinary professionals.

Award semifinalists, announced in February, were chosen from a pool of 24,000 online entries by judges, committee members and previous winners. Winners of the James Beard Media Awards are announced April 25, and the rest of the final awards are revealed James Beard Foundation Awards Gala at the Lyric Opera of Chicago on May 1.
