I’ve frequently said that, so long as it’s fresh, there’s no such thing as bad pizza.

After trying the jelly bean pizza offered at local music and arts venue El Club, I still stick by that statement, surprisingly.

First of all, there’s a good reason the southwest Detroit bar is mixing sweet with savory. The Easter Pizza pie is a collaboration between El Club’s pizza kitchen Pepe Z and Detroit rapper Danny Brown.

The eight-slice pizza is $15 and proceeds benefit Brown’s favorite charity, InsideOut Detroit. The literary arts project works with students to help them express themselves through poetry, short stories and other forms of art.

A Detroit native, Brown recently released a video for his song “Ain’t It Funny,” which was directed by Jonah Hill and stars Gus Van Sant and Joanna Kerns. The rapper is known for his creativity, and was called “one of rap’s most unique figures in recent memory” by MTV.

So it’s no surprise that when it came time to create his own pizza, he looked to black jelly beans instead of black olives.

The Easter Pizza a thin-crust deal with cheese, topped with jelly beans and chopped up peanut butter cups. There’s no red sauce. The melted chocolate gives off vibes of s’mores — a familiar smell to a person that spent most childhood summers camping at Michigan state parks — but nothing prepared me for the sweetness of a bright pink sugary jelly bean on a cheese slice.

One slice was good; a fun treat. Would I eat several slices? No. However, it was much more inviting than the other Pepe Z and Danny Brown charity collaboration pie: a liver and onions pizza named Mystery Meat. Deliciously brief

For the second year in a row, Ferndale’s Valentine Vodka has been named “World’s Best Varietal” vodka at the 2017 World Drinks Awards. Last year they won the same category and also won the overall category “World’s Best Vodka.”

Waterfront restaurant Brownie’s on the Lake will open for the season Tuesday. The St. Clair Shores hot spot has undergone renovations to expand its tiki patio to include 80 more seats.

Central Kitchen + Bar (660 Woodward) launched a new Wednesday happy hour, 3-7 p.m., featuring $5 Tito’s cocktails and $6 bar snacks like chimichurri wings.
