Ferndale is known for being hip, trendy and friendly to all things that have an independent spirit. So it’s no wonder the annual DIY Street Fair is such a popular event.
It’s a family-friendly (and dog-friendly) atmosphere, but with an edge that includes plenty of adult beverages and loud rock and electronic music.
Now in its seventh year, the 2014 DIY Street Fair was almost canceled due to road work, but construction plans were postponed. Here are five highlights to look forward to at the annual free outdoor festival.
Vendors galore: Bring cash, and maybe a big purse, because you will find plenty you’ll want to take home with you in the marketplace area of DIY. One of the yearly favorites is stained glass artist Carey Gustafson. Her business Glass Action will be on hand with night lights, jewelry, ornaments and quirky home decor.
Rock ’n’ Roll: The Hard Lessons have come a long way since forming at Michigan State during the Detroit garage rock boom of the ’00s. While the indie rock trio is choosy about what gigs they play, they still have the all the chops and insane energy that made them regional favorites. The Hard Lessons play Friday night. Other headliners are Jamaican Queens on Saturday and Deastro on Sunday.
Food: Local restaurants, food trucks and catering companies will feed the crowds at DIY. One staple is the Detroit BBQ Company. Folks line up to get the pulled pork, ribs, burnt ends and more. For a treat for Fido, look for Spencer Street Canine Treats. The decorated dog cookies use natural, human-grade ingredients, but are specifically made for your pup.
After Party: On Friday night, the party continues inside the Loving Touch with Flint’s electronic pop entertainer Tunde Olaniran, all-female punk trio Cheerleader (also from Flint) and others. The Loving Touch is located within the festival’s footprint at 22634 Woodward. There’s no cover charge for the after party.
Nearby: Why hit only one art-filled event when you can visit two? On Nine Mile west of Woodward, the Funky Ferndale Art Fair features 120 creators in a variety of media, including metal, wood, paint, photography, fiber, pottery and more. This free fair runs 3-8 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday and noon-5 p.m. Sunday.
