Patti Smith’s next memoir, “M Train,” will touch on her years living in Michigan, and now the poet/musician will appear Oct. 12 at the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor to read from the book, which Knopf will publish Oct. 6.

“An Evening With Patti Smith,” presented by Nicola’s Books and the Michigan Theater, will also consist of a Q and A with the audience, and the poet/musician will sign books in what’s billed as the only Michigan appearance on her book tour.

Tickets are $35 and $24.50, and go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 7 at 10 a.m., and will be available at Nicola’s Books and all Ticketmaster outlets, including ticketmaster.com. Tickets are $35 and $24.50. Ticket buyers will also receive a hard-cover copy of “M Train,” and the books will be available for pickup the night of the show at the Michigan Theater.

Smith refers to the book as “a road map to my life,” and the chapters are set up as different “stations,” both real and spiritual, including artist Frida Kahlo’s Casa Azul in Mexico, Smith’s favorite coffeehouse in New York, and her life in Michigan with husband, Fred “Sonic” Smith. Smith met the former MC5 guitarist at a record company party at a downtown Detroit coney island, and moved here to live with him soon after. They married at Mariner’s Church on Jefferson, and raised two children.

Fred Smith died in 1994, just 45, and she writes about that profound loss in the book. Smith’s previous memoir “Just Kids,” which covered her early years in New York, won the National Book Award in 2010. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007.

The Michigan Theater is located at 603 E. Liberty in Ann Arbor. Go to michtheater.org or nicolasbooks.com for more information.
