Tai Fai means “great and fast” in Cantonese, and that’s what the carry-out restaurant in Oak Park has been giving to customers since opening last year. Tai Fai quickly became a hit with customers who spread the word of the diverse and affordable Asian fusion menu through friends and online reviews.
It wasn’t until this summer, though, that owner Bonnie Deng decided her spot was ready for its grand opening.
A ribbon cutting ceremony on Aug. 28 will celebrate the sushi and Cantonese restaurant’s next level, which includes new menu items and the ability to handle big catering orders, Deng says.
Tai Fai added a few new sushi rolls, a brown rice option and a curry entree with choice of chicken, steak, shrimp, vegetable or tofu. You can still add a California roll to any entree order for just $2.25.
Visit Tai Fai at 8505 W. Nine Mile, Oak Park. Call (248) 336-9622.
The Whitney offers loyalty perks, Shakespeare
A fine dining destination for more than a century, the Whitney restaurant in Midtown Detroit is offering guests a special deal that rewards loyalty and also aims to ensure that the landmark continues to thrive as the city grows and changes (especially through the upcoming M-1 construction).
Named the Whitney Preservation Partnership and Social Club, the $100 annual membership fee includes a $25 gift card to the restaurant and 10 percent off food and beverage purchases throughout the year. Members also get a free steak and lobster dinner on his/her birthday, invitation for two to special events and other perks.
Also worth noting, this Sunday the Whitney will host “Brunch with the Bard.” Champagne starts to flow at noon with a plated breakfast followed by an outdoor performance of “A Midsummer’s Night Dream” by Shakespeare in Detroit. Tickets, which include a dessert buffet during intermission, are $75.
To learn more about either of these promotions, call the Whitney at (313) 832-5700.
■The 2014 fall edition of Detroit Restaurant Week is set for Sept. 19-28. The promotion offers three-course dinners for $30 at soon-to-be-announced Detroit fine dining restaurants.
■Congratulations to North Peak Beer for earning a Gold Medal for its Diabolical IPA at the Los Angeles International Beer Competition this summer. The Dexter brewery offers the unfiltered, dry-hopped beer all year round.
