Bobcat Bonnie’s, the newest hip joint on Michigan Avenue in Corktown, is mixing super friendly service with an eclectic menu and full bar.

Located where O’Blivions Corktown Cafe was until it closed in spring 2014, Bonnie’s opened in early August after an interior revamp and complete food and drink menu overhaul.

The cozy brick touches are still there on the inside, but the hunter green tables have been painted black, and dashes of color have been added like bright yellow bar stools at communal tables and yellow and gray geometric wallpaper from Detroit Wallpaper Co.

It’s cliche to say a food menu has something for everyone, but the one at Bonnie’s is wide-reaching in terms of cuisine and affordability. Get a sweet and savory starter like fried goat cheese drizzled with honey for $3, or make it a meal with a spicy buffalo fried chicken sandwich with semolina battered onion rings for $10. Fried bologna and whitefish are also on the sandwich board, along with a variety of burgers and vegetarian sandwiches.

Other veggie options are the mushroom ceviche, kale and chickpea salad and the beet tartare (that’s beet tartare).

A highlight of Sunday brunch is the make-your-own-mimosa bar in addition to the classic Bloody Mary bar. Guests can choose among seven types of juice to mix with their champagne, plus an array of garnishes.

Besides a cocktail or craft beer, your server may offer you an old-fashioned game like Uno or Connect Four to play while you wait. Bonnie’s has a good selection of pinball and arcade games in the back, too.

“We wanted to create a kind of place where you can go and have a good time, but the food is very high quality,” says owner Matt Buskard.

Buskard, who was previously the general manager at Gold Cash Gold down the street, says the emphasis at his place is on being approachable and having friendly service.

Bon Appétit name drops Detroit restaurants

National food magazine Bon Appétit has a bit of a crush on the Detroit food scene. Local restaurants were mentioned four times in the latest issue. This includes a feature on sesame peanut bars from Rose’s Fine Food co-owner Molly Mitchell. The magazine also recommends the rabbit pot pie at Republic, the Castelvetrano olives at Antietam and the crispy pig ears at Gold Cash Gold.
