Michigan-based sub shop Tubby’s got into the pizza game Wednesday.

Specialty pizzas with toppings similar to their grilled subs are available at their new location in Riverview, which opened Wednesday at 18520 Fort. If customers react positively, pizzas will be added to Tubby’s franchises throughout Southeast Michigan, says CEO Robert Paganes.

“We wanted to have pizza offering for some time now but we wanted to make sure we got it right before we went public with it,” said Paganes in a release. He adds that the reason behind opening the new Riverview restaurant is to test new products and processes.

“We’re confident our pizzas are going to be an immediate hit with consumers but our experience here in Riverview will give us the real answer and will allow us to make any necessary tweaks before we offer our pizza products to our franchisees system-wide,” he said.

Besides the option to build-your-own pizza Tubby’s will offer Philly cheesesteak, barbecue chicken and “everything” pizzas. The latter has mild peppers, pepperoni, ham, bacon, beef, sausage, mushroom, onion, green pepper and black olives.

Tubby’s will use its own pizza sauce for these pies. Prices range from $1.75 per slice to $39 for a party-size specialty pizza. Slices will be sold through the drive-thru of locations that have them, making Tubby’s one of the few fast food restaurants that serve pizza through a drive-thru.

Tubby’s was founded in St. Clair Shores in 1968 and has around 60 locations in Metro Detroit.
