Wahlburgers in Greektown will officially open Monday, owner Nino Cutraro told The Detroit News Saturday during a soft service at the two-story bar and restaurant.
Cutraro and his wife Elizabeth co-own the Detroit restaurant with actor Mark Wahlberg and his brothers Paul, the chef, and Donnie, also an actor. Mark, Paul and Cutraro were in Detroit Wednesday for a red carpet event which allowed a few VIP guests first access to the restaurant.
“We were open Wednesday for a few hours, and then Friday we were open for seven hours. We’re going to try to be open until 11 p.m. or midnight (Saturday). (Sunday) we take a day off.”
Cutraro, who also owns Bella Piatti in Birmingham, said there’s been been a wait to get in the restaurant “since day one” but they were able to serve about 650 people throughout the day on Friday.
Valorie Modzelewski of New Boston dined at Wahlburgers Saturday afternoon with her family. Wahlberg, who is in Detroit filming “Transformers 5” was spotted at the restaurant at 569 Monroe Saturday afternoon.
“It was phenomenal, (my son) met Mark and Mark was cool, the staff was unbelievable,” she said.
“(Mark Wahlberg) was a really good guy and I liked him,” said Ryan Modzelewski, 8. “He’s funny and the people are very good here and I liked them. I got a cheeseburger and fries.”
“That turkey burger, the Thanksgiving day burger, was phenomenal,” added Valorie. “Great place.”
On Wednesday fans lined up as early as 9 a.m. to catch a glimpse of the actor who arrived that evening with Paul Wahlberg on the red carpet. Cameras for their A&E reality show “Wahlburgers” were filming the event.
According to its website, Wahlburgers has locations in Toronto, New York and the brothers’ native state, Massachusetts. The Greektown restaurant is the first of six Wahlburgers planned for southeast Michigan. Cutraro says the next two Wahlburgers will be in the tri-county area and will open in 2017. These locations are part of a nationwide expansion for the brand, which struck deals with various franchise groups to expand to a total of 118 restaurants.
Wahlburgers Detroit serves lunch and dinner. The menu includes a full bar with a focus on burgers, sandwiches, sides, salads and gourmet sodas.
