With a new chef, new menu and new kitchen, the long-standing Ferndale restaurant Como’s is offering deals and looking for a fresh start after being shuttered for multiple health code violations in September.

“We’ve made some fantastic changes and additions and have thoroughly addressed and resolved any outstanding issues with the Oakland County Health Division,” said owner George Grego in a press release. Grego’s father opened Como’s at Nine Mile and Woodward in 1961.

Through Sunday, customers can order pasta dishes at half price. The menu features staples such as gnocchi, ravioli and lasagna, plus a build-your-own pasta option with five kinds of noodles (including a gluten-free pasta), seven sauces and add-ons such as meat and vegetables.

The new, streamlined menu retains some Como’s staples, including roasted garlic with peppers, chicken piccata and veal Parmesan. Pizza remains the featured item with a menu of specialty pies and custom-made thin crust, square deep dish or a small, thin gluten-free crust.

The new chef, Pete Lech, has worked with the Andiamo restaurant group and is a graduate of Schoolcraft College.

The owners reached out to local artists to help spruce up the decor in the restaurant, which has suffered from an image problem (the restaurant’s liquor license was briefly suspended in December due to unpaid fees). Six local artists were invited to redesign the dining room’s table tops to feature hometown imagery like a Ford Mustang and the Detroit skyline.

Como’s had been cited over the past few years for issues with cleanliness, problems with the sewage system, unsafe food temperatures and insects.

Como’s, which also offers delivery, is open daily at 11 a.m. Como’s closes at 4 a.m. Friday to Saturday and 2 a.m. all other days.
