Presented by the Brewers Association,a not-for-profit trade association dedicated to small and independent American brewers, the Great American Beer Festival is the largest commercial beer competition in the world. In its 29th year, the 2015 competition surpassed all previous participation records. Winners were chosen from 6,647 competition entries (20 percent more than in 2014) from 1,552 breweries hailing from 50 states plus Washington, D.C.
The competition awarded 275 medals to commercial breweries in the United States, plus three Pro-Am medals to teams of amateur brewers paired with professional brewers.
“American brewers continue to create innovative, flavorful high quality beers. That was on full display at this year’s Great American Beer Festival,” said Chris Swersey, Great American Beer Festival competition manager.
An interesting side note: The 2015 competition saw three new style categories: Chili Pepper Beer, Session India Pale Ale and Mixed Culture Brett Beer. But no gold medal was awarded in the Pumpkin Beer category. Silver and bronze medals were awarded (to Minnesota's Mankato Brewery and Nevada's Great Basin Brewing Co.) but judges deemed not to hand out a gold medal.
