Soup and pols

Tom and Diane Schoenith unveiled The Roostertail’s holiday décor on Tuesday with a “Soup for Supper” party. Chef Paul Hohendorf and his crew served more than 10 soups, including curried broccoli and cheddar served in a sourdough bowl and split pea with ribbons of prosciutto. Guests included Richard and Jane Manoogian, Police Chief James Craig, and former Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer and wife, former 36th District Judge Trudy DunCombe Archer. That same night, on the upper level of the waterfront complex, Warren Evans’ supporters were celebrating his victory as Wayne County Executive-elect, so when the Archers arrived, they were immediately steered to the Evans party. “We’re here as guests of the Schoeniths for the soup party,” Trudy Archer whispered. “They saw us and assumed we were going where the politicians are. Not this time.”

Chili Cook-off to benefit Detroit firefighters

Restaurant owners Grace Keros (American Coney Island) and Dean Bach (M-Brew and Dino’s Lounge) are teaming up with Fox2 Detroit’s Charlie LeDuff to host the “Metro D 10 Alarm Chili Challenge” from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday under a heated tent in the parking lot of the Corktown Tavern. The challenge will pit teams of Metro Detroit firemen against each other in a competition to see who’s serving the best firehouse chili. “This is going to be so much fun for such an important cause, and it’s only $10 to come, to eat, to judge and to give back,” Keros said. Proceeds will benefit the Detroit Firemen’s Benevolent Fund, which serves injured firefighters, their families and retirees.
