The Paris-Detroit connection
We got a shout out the other day from Metro Detroit fashion photographer Boswell, currently in Paris on assignment, who's shooting Paris Fashion Week. It seems that illustrious French painter Dominique Renson has selected The Bos to be one of the subjects in her new art series, "The Passion." Says Bos: "She will portray the subjects expressing joy, anger, fear or sadness. When I was in her studio modeling for her, she took photos with three cameras to use as reference for her paintings. It was wonderful to be on the other side of the camera, and to express myself as I often ask models to do." Dominique's partner, filmmaker Chantal Lasbats, is planning to shoot an art documentary in Detroit this year, as well. A big fan of the Motor City, Dominique will appear in the film and plans to rent a studio here where she can paint while the film is being made. She and Boswell also will partner up on a show of paintings and photographs for exhibits in Paris and Detroit.
Do as I say, not as I did?
We loved Madonna's advice to her daughter, Lourdes, who is attending the University of Michigan (as told to Carson Daly on the "Today" show). "I tell her, do everything in moderation, try not to kill all your brain cells, and go to class," said Madonna, 56. Oh, but hang on a sec: we recall in a 1983 interview with The Detroit News' Sunday Magazine, Madonna talked about how often she steered her little red Mustang east from UM, when she was a student there, toward the bright lights of Detroit. Her destination: McNichols in Detroit, where she would go hang out till the wee hours at Bookies for the punk bands and the other clubs for dancing. So Mom was having some gritty, urban fun while at Ann Arbor. Lourdes, don't let her fool you.
■CBS Radio Detroit's 98.7 AMP is hosting "Gown Town" on April 19 for local teens who may not be able to afford a fab new frock for their prom. Gently used prom, homecoming and bridesmaid dresses will be collected throughout March and early April, and then the teens are invited to go to Oakland Mall and shop for their dream dress for free. Some 400 girls picked up dresses via this campaign last year. Teachers, principals, coaches and other adults who mentor teens are all encouraged to tell girls who might need a prom dress about the program. For information, go to 987AMPRADIO.COM ... Tavis Smiley is headed to Detroit for a visit March 23-25 to film several episodes of "The Tavis Smiley Show" in front of a live audience at Wayne State. He'll take a close look at downtown Detroit's resurgence and how it affects longtime Detroiters. In other shows, he'll explore Dearborn's Arab-American community, and the arts and education. Smiley's show airs on PBS and will be filmed in Detroit by Detroit Public Television (hey, didn't they once have a downtown studio?). ... Filmmaker Jim Jarmusch is looking for footage of Iggy and the Stooges from their appearance at the Goose Lake Festival near Jackson in 1970.
