Quote with Maya Angelou stamp comes under scrutiny
Poet Maya Angelou was honored with her own stamp and a dedication ceremony in Washington this week. The author and activist died in May at age 86. Her stamp comes with a quote that reads "A bird doesn't sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song." However, children's author Joan Walsh Anglund told the Washington Post that she wrote that quote in "A Cup of Sun," her collection of poetry published in 1967. Anglund isn't mad, though. She told the post that it's something that "easily happens" and she wishes the stamp success. The quote has been attributed to Angelou for years and is associated with her book "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings."
