Detroit woman claiming to be the real Cookie Lyon sues ‘Empire’ creator
A Detroit woman has filed a $300 million lawsuit against Fox and “Empire” creator Lee Daniels. Sophia Eggleston is alleging that the show stole her life story, and that the similarities between her and the main character Cookie Lyon are no coincidence. Eggleston, 53, was a drug kingpin who did jail time for manslaughter. She wrote her life story down in a memoir and shared it with a Los Angeles screenwriter Rita Miller who said she was going to pitch Eggleston’s story to Daniels. The lawsuit cites specific similarities, such as Cookie’s way of dressing, that they both had a gay family member and they were both jailed for drugs. “There’s no possibility the similarities are...mere coincidence,” the suit reads. “Defendants had access to and a copy of” Eggleston’s memoir.
