George Michael was ‘kindest, most generous man’

Elton John says his late friend and fellow Brit George Michael was one of the best vocalists in the world. The Associated Press reports John paid tribute to Michael during his Beats 1 Radio show Monday, calling him one of Britain’s “most brilliant songwriters.” John and Michael famously collaborated on the 1991 version of John’s classic “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me.” John said they had been friends for years before the duet. John calls Michael “the kindest, most generous man.” He says he’ll miss Michael’s humanity most of all.” Michael died at his England home at age 53 on Christmas Day.

Christie Brinkley poses for swimsuit issue at age 63

Nearly 40 years after her first appearance on the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, model Christie Brinkley will return to the magazine’s special edition. Brinkley, 63, posed in a revealing black one-piece in shallow water with her two daughters – Alexa Ray Joel and Sailor Brinkley Cook – in bikinis at her side. Brinkley posted the photo to Instagram this week. “I am excited to announced that I am back in (the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue). With my gorgeous daughters ... by my side who is going to be looking at me!” The model thanked SI for “sending the powerful message that good things come in packages of every size and we do not come with an expiration date.”

Comedian Irwin Corey died at 102

Known for his surreal brand of humor and creative word play, comedian and actor Irwin Corey died Monday at age 102. The Brooklyn native had a wide-reaching career that saw him working with stars like Jackie Gleason and Woody Allen. Lenny Bruce called him “brilliant,” and Corey was often billed as “the world’s foremost authority.” A few years ago Corey and his wife Fran Corey, who died in 2011, were the subject of an award-winning documentary narrated by Susan Sarandon titled “Irwin & Fran.”

Britney Spears asks for prayers for her niece

Britney Spears is asking her massive fan base for prayers after her niece was hospitalized Sunday in Louisiana after an ATV accident that left her trapped under water. “Need all the wishes and prayers for my niece,” Spears posted under a photo of Maddie, 8, who is the daughter of Spears’ sister Jamie Lynn Spears. Maddie is in stable but critical condition. According to a statement from the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff, the child was trying to avoid a ditch when she drove into a pond on the family’s property.

Local performers wanted

The Detroit RiverFront Conservancy is seeking dancers, poets, actors and other performers to entertain at the Campbell Terrace in the Dequindre Cut this spring and summer. The outdoor stage has attracted impromptu performances in the past, and this year the Conservancy is looking to schedule local talent for nine performances this spring and summer.
