Common releases video about blindness in America
Musician and actor Common dropped a spoken-word video this week to raise awareness for vision loss. “Sixty-one million Americans at risk of losing their sight, is this your future, is this your vision” asks Common in “Stand in the Way of Darkness,” a minute and a half video published Tuesday by See America. “It’s time to make the time to protect your vision.” The video directs views to SeeAmerica.vision for information.
Kanye West’s family member dies unexpectedly
The 1-year-old son of Kanye West’s cousin, Ricky Anderson, died unexpectedly in his sleep Monday. TMZ reports that there was no previous sign of illness of distress, and that the child had just celebrated his first birthday. Anderson works at West’s record label.
Joni Sledge died of natural causes
Joni Sledge, one-fourth of the disco group Sister Sledge, was found dead in her Arizona home Friday. The singer, who was 60, died of natural causes due to a preexisting condition, according to TMZ. Sledge and her three sisters had success in the late ’70s with the No. 2 disco/pop single “We Are Family.”
Nickelback goes Diamond
Canadian rock band Nickelback has joined the exclusive club of Diamond-certified artists. Their fifth studio album, “All the Right Reasons,” has surpassed 10 million in sales and streams. In spite of it being one of the best-selling albums of all time, the 2005 release, which included the singles “Photograph” and “Rockstar,” was not praised by critics. Nickelback’s 45-city tour in support of their ninth album “Feed the Machine,” hits DTE Energy Music Theatre on June 24.
■Rocker Gregg Allman will not be touring in 2017, a message on his website stated Monday. He canceled some rescheduled June dates, as well. In 2016 he canceled several dates due to health issues that were not specified.
■Gladys Knight will give a special Mother’s Day performance May 14 at the Fox Theatre. Tickets, $59.50-$125, go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday via Ticketmaster or OlympiaEntertainment.com
■Actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco were recently married. They were engaged in 2015.
■“Family Matters” actor Darius McCrary’s wife, Tammy Brawner, has filed for divorce and has requested physical custody of their 1-year-old daughter. TMZ reports that Brawner wants McCrary to attend “alcohol/drug abuse and batterers’ intervention classes.”
