Partner of ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ author dies
Rayya Elias died this week following a battle with pancreatic and liver cancer. Elias, 57, was the life partner of “Eat, Pray, Love” author Elizabeth Gilbert. “Thank you for letting me walk with you right to the edge of the river,” Gilbert wrote in a tribute. “It has been the greatest honor of my life.” The pair had a commitment ceremony in June.
Filmmaker Paul Haggis accused of rape, misconduct
Filmmaker Paul Haggis has been hit with a civil lawsuit claiming he raped two publicists and sexually harassed two other women. A screenwriter for the movies “Million Dollar Baby” and “Crash,” Haggis and his reps have denied the allegations and filed a counter-complaint to the lawsuit. The accusations begin with a lawsuit from Haleigh Breest filed Dec. 15. After that filing, three other women came forward to Breest’s lawyers. In separate interviews with the Associated Press, the three new accusers gave detailed accounts of incidents that occurred between 1996 and 2015.
Alex Trebeck to take a leave from ‘Jeopardy!’
Host Alex Trebeck will take brief hiatus from “Jeopardy!” following his recent brain surgery. Trebeck posted a video to the jeopardy.com explaining his leave, saying he had a subdural hematoma caused by a fall he suffered a few months ago. “The surgery was successful,” he said. “The prognosis is excellent, and I expect to be back in the studio taping more “Jeopardy!” programs very, very soon.” The show’s schedule will not be interrupted because they tape months in advance, but the College Championship will air later, in April.
Helena Bonham Carter to play Princess Margaret
Netflix drama “The Crown” has signed on “Alice in Wonderland” star Helena Bonham Carter to play Princess Margaret in its third season. She’ll take over the role from Vanessa Kirby, who played the royal in the first two seasons.
