Last week, Walmart and the "Today" show surprised families in Detroit's Brightmoor neighborhood with a large donation of food, school supplies, toys, clothes and holiday items totaling nearly $50,000.

The donation was given Dec. 5 at the Brightmoor Community Center in Detroit and it aired Friday morning on "Today." It's part of the show's "Getting to the Heart of Christmas" segment, in which the show tells a story of people in need and then surprises them with donated items.

Detroiter Cher Doner partners with the No Kid Hungry charity to make sure children in that area have enough to eat. She lets neighborhood kids play in her yard and encourages them to be active and healthy. She also was surprised with gifts.

Doner was given new outdoor furniture and play equipment, including a swing set and trampoline. Walmart also gave her a $1,000 gift card, a big-screen television and an iPad that she can use to access the No Kid Hungry app.
