Atlanta — Nine buildings in downtown Grantville, Georgia — where hit television drama "The Walking Dead" was filmed — are up for sale.
Grantville's former mayor says the structures — virtually the entire downtown — are on the eBay online auction block until Friday in hopes of finding a buyer who can breathe new life into the town on the southern fringe of metro Atlanta.
Former mayor Jim Sells says the asking price for the buildings is for $680,000. Another offer of two additional buildings for a total price of $940,000 is also listed on eBay.
"What I really want is someone who will not only buy it, but put a lot of money into something that we can all be proud of down here," Sells said.
Grantville, about 45 miles southwest of Atlanta, was featured prominently in the third season of "The Walking Dead." In one episode, bodies of "walkers" were buried in a vacant lot under the brick archway remaining from a cotton mill building. Gunshots were fired from a nearby rooftop.
Fans began showing up in Grantville, as they have at other filming locations in nearby Senoia and Atlanta, to see the sites firsthand. Sells, who was Grantville's mayor during that time period, began leading free weekly tours that have attracted fans from as far as Australia, Singapore and Brazil.
Sells says the auction's end on Friday might not result in an immediate sale. He said there's been a lot of interest, but he's still searching for a serious buyer.
Some offers have been "piecemeal," he said, from people interested in purchasing some but all of the property. That's his second option if he can't find a buyer for the entire package, he said.
"After Friday we'll talk to those folks," he said.
