You might not find many self-proclaimed “preaching health enthusiasts,” but Gina Prince is one of them.

Prince has a Ph.D. in theology, masters in counseling and love for fitness.

“With all of that combined, my life is a ministry,” she says.

The 47-year-old born-and-raised Detroiter is launching a new workout DVD, Health-N-Soul Fitness on Saturday at Bert’s in Eastern Market. The free event from 6 p.m. to midnight will include food, 100 DVD giveaways and live entertainment from Fast Freddie, D.J. Anthony Bond and comedian Bill Hill. The event also will also show clips from workout, filmed at a public high school in Detroit.

“We’re just going to party. It’s like a family reunion,” says Prince, a real estate agent in the Washington, D.C., area, but has her family, friends and church rooted in Detroit.

Prince, also a certified fitness coach and trainer, says the strength-conditioning 30-minute workout she created (and does five times a day) is unlike any other.

“I really challenge you to go through the process of change,” she says, adding, her message is wholeness. “I believe God wants us to be whole, and wholeness entails mind, body and soul.”

The basis for what she preaches stems from her childhood, as she experienced several traumatic situations that carried over into adulthood.

“There was some rejection, some abandonment that evolved into drug abuse and some sex industry jobs,” Prince says. “I was just a broken soul. I tried to be happy, I pretended to be happy, but I was never happy. And I went through a roller coaster of weight gain though the process because I had down days, months, seasons, and then I had glimpses of positive seasons.”

She says it was because of a newfound relationship with God that she saw her life was “more valuable, and it meant something.” Motivated by her faith, she penned the book “Born into Sin, Transformed into Destiny” (Creation House, 2010). But she still struggled with personal relationships and trusting others.

Then one day, a friend asked if she wanted to join her at the gym. And that one workout became a turning point that eventually inspired her to create the workout DVD.

“I started working out, and I felt like it was doing something, like it was breaking up that hurt and it was having me focus on something other than relationships or distracting issues,” she says. “... It was something about this moment that I actually got it. It wasn’t about just getting my body right — it was an emotional, mental thing that needed to be adjusted in my life.”

She says her workout — which combines spirituality with conditioning routines such as squats, planks and push-ups — is meant for children to 80-year-olds. No equipment is necessary.

“It’s really power-packed,” she says. “I feel people will walk away from it feeling very encouraged and inspired that they can do anything.”

Prince, who hosts a weekly a radio talk show “Dr. Gina’s Radio Chat,” travels around the country, offering fitness boot camps. Her next boot camp in Michigan will be held at 7 p.m. Dec. 27. A location will be announced in the coming weeks.
