The Michigan State graduate left Channel 7 in 2015 to work for Scripps Washington Bureau
After leaving WXYZ’s news team last year, investigative reporter Ross Jones will return to the station starting Feb. 1, he told The Detroit News.
The Michigan State University graduate left Channel 7 in September 2015 to join the station’s parent company, Scripps, in its Washington Bureau. He broke the news on social media this week that he would return to his “roots” starting next month.
“I’ve felt the tug to return more than a few times since I left in 2015, often while the big stories were playing out,” he stated in his post, adding that it was the stories that nearly slipped through the cracks that convinced him to return to cover Metro Detroit.
“Were it not for two reporters – one that wrote for a small newspaper that publishes four days a week and the other who wasn’t even employed by a news organization – we may have never learned of the mass poisoning taking place in Flint,” he said in his post. “Recent news of buyouts and layoffs at Detroit’s two newspapers represented something of a tipping point for me, as I know what a critical role the dailies play in setting the news agenda. For much of my time at Channel 7, we helped set that agenda too, and I can’t imagine a more important time to start again.”
Jones originally joined WXYZ in 2005.
