Icy roads and sharply dropping temperatures prompted some area districts to close schools Monday as Metro Detroit dug out of the latest snowfall, which reached nearly 6 inches in some areas, according to the National Weather Service.
It might be a good idea to keep those shovels handy since the agency predicts more snow will fall around Metro Detroit Monday. It's expected to start coming down between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. and end by 2 a.m. Tuesday.
"Another inch to two inches is possible," said Sara Pampreen, a meteorologist with the weather service's White Lake Township office.
After Monday, Pampreen said the forecast calls for dry weather until Tuesday night and Wednesday when there's more snow in store.
"We're expecting more snow Wednesday," Pampreen said. "So it's going to be a little bit of a roller coaster as far as precipitation goes."
Metro Detroit can expect as much as 1-3 inches of snow in the next round, according to the weather service. Higher amounts of snow are expected below Interstate 69, it said.
That's on top of Sunday's snowfall amounts. Totals as of Sunday evening for the latest round of snowfall included 4.2 inches in Shelby Township, 3.3 in Wixom; 4.8 in Berkley; 5.7 in White Lake Township; 5.4 in Lake Orion; 4.6 in Ann Arbor; 6.3 in Otisville and 5.5 in Flint in Genesee County; 5 inches in Oakley in Saginaw; 4.3 in Romulus, 5 in Wyandotte and 2.9 inches in Howell.
Temperature highs are expected to hover around the mid-20s for the next few days as arctic air hangs around the area, the weather service said. Pampreen said highs for this time year are usually about 33 degrees.
For portions of south central, southwest and west central Michigan, the National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory from 7 p.m. Monday to 7 a.m. Tuesday with accumulations of 3 to 5 inches, with localized amounts up to 8 inches.
