Corktown in Detroit went green today, even though St. Patrick’s Day isn’t until Friday.

A crowd estimated to be between 50,000 and 75,000 strong packed the streets in the historically Irish neighborhood, where the parade has been held since 1985.

An estimated 4,000 people marched in the parade, which began at 12:30 p.m. and continued until around 2:30 p.m. Among those participating were six high school bands from Metro Detroit and six Celtic pipe and drum bands from Detroit, Birmingham and Windsor.

The day began with a 5k race to benefit the St. Patrick’s Senior Center in Detroit and the KPMG Family for Literacy.
