Guide book publisher Lonely Planet gave Detroit the second spot on its top-10 cities to visit in 2018.
The travel media authority announced its selections of top 10 countries, top 10 cities, and top 10 regions as well as best-value destinations on its website Tuesday.
Chile took the top spot for best country. Seville, Spain, was the best city, followed by Detroit.
Detroit was called "America's most ambitious renovation project" by Lonely Planet, saying visitors will be surprised with how packed with pedestrians and pedal taverns the city's streets are.
Detroit was the only city in the United States to make the list.
"... Detroit is more than a boom town: the largest city in Michigan has a varied and complex history that spans more than three centuries and industries from motor cars to Motown," according to the website. "Those investing in the city are, for the most part, respecting that heritage by choosing to restore, not replace, gambling that the extra expense of a renovation will yield returns in character.
Historic hotels, including the David Whitney, Westin and Detroit Foundation Hotel were praised.
Buildings weren't the only landmarks mentioned by the Lonely Planet. Corktown, Slows Bar BQ, Sugar House, Gold Cash Cold, Grand Trunk and Bakers Keyboard Lounge highlighted as hot spots for where to dine and drink.
