The Old Newsboys' Goodfellow Fund of Detroit said its 2017 fundraising campaign surpassed its goal of $1.1 million.

“We are very happy to have exceeded our 2017 fundraising goal and appreciate everyone who participated,” Mike Jennings, the charity's 2017 president, said in a statement. “Delivering on our mission of ‘No Kiddie Without a Christmas’ wouldn’t be possible without the community support and efforts of our dedicated members and volunteers throughout the entire year, both of which allow us to continue to positively impact children’s lives.”

Officials with the Detroit-based nonprofit said the group raised $1.2 million. Of that amount, more than $46,000 was raised through its 104th Annual Detroit Goodfellows' Sales Day, held Nov. 27. Hundreds of volunteers, Detroit Police officers and Detroit firefighters sold a special edition of The Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press across the city.

The charity annually distributes 34,000 holiday gift packages through Detroit police precincts to needy children in Detroit, Hamtramck, Highland Park, Harper Woods and River Rouge.

It is collecting donations for 2018. Donations may be mailed to The Old Newsboy's Goodfellow Fund of Detroit, PO Box 44444, Detroit, MI  48244-0444, or made through its website or by texting DetKids to 56512.
