A Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan effort to feed youths over the summer break is set to launch.

Officials are set to announce the start of the 12-week Hunger Free Summer campaign during an event 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Gleaners Detroit Distribution Center, 2131 Beaufait.

More than half of Michigan’s children rely on free and reduced-fee meals during the school year and when school is out, officials say, families struggle to make up the meals. Gleaners will provide 2 million meals for children and their families throughout the summer.

To help the program, Citizens Bank and other supporters are seeking the community’s help and will match donations, coordinators said.
