Eastbound I-96 is closed at Spencer Road in Livingston County as crews work to repair a bridge that was damaged after a semi crashed into it, state officials said.
All three eastbound lanes of the freeway east of US-23 closed at 1 p.m. Thursday and will remain closed until demolition and cleanup are completed, officials said. A detour directs motorists to Spencer Road, Old US-23 and Grand River Avenue.
DOT said the bridge was damaged and must be removed before eastbound I-96 can safely be reopened. A truck crashed into the Pleasant Valley Road bridge on eastbound I-96 Wednesday night, according to MDOT. The crash happened during rush hour near exit 150, the department said in a tweet.
In addition, a single lane of westbound I-96 will be closed east of Pleasant Valley Road beginning at 1 p.m. Thursday. A second lane of the westbound freeway is scheduled to close at 7 p.m.
All traffic, including eastbound I-96, is scheduled to reopen by 5 a.m. Friday.
Pleasant Valley Road over I-96 will be closed for about six months until a new bridge can be built, MDOT said.
