A Springfield Township resident knocked over a gun at his home this week, discharging a bullet that plowed through walls and ended up in a neighbor’s door across the street, Oakland County officials said.

The mishap began when a 24-year-old man in the 17000 block of Louise Drive about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday was clearing out a dresser drawer, in which he kept a loaded 9mm handgun, investigators said in a statement.

The man accidentally knocked the weapon out of the drawer and it fell on the ground. It didn’t end there: When he picked up the gun to check for damage, “he discharged the firearm,” the release said.

The bullet plowed through several walls in the residence before striking the front door of the home across the street.

The neighbors were not home at the time, and no one was injured.

Police collected the gun as evidence. He was released at the scene pending a review by the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office for possible charges, authorities said Wednesday.
