A 55-year-old Livonia resident died early Wednesday in Westland after suffering an apparent medical emergency behind the wheel and crashing into a pedestrian bridge.

The crash occurred around 5 a.m. on the east side of Newburgh near Laramie, police said in a statement. Officers found the man unresponsive and rushed him to St. Mary's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
