Oakland led nearly wire-to-wire to hand Youngstown State a 58-48 defeat in a Horizon League women’s basketball game at Youngstown, Ohio, on Saturday.

Leah Somerfield converted a three-point play 1:24 into the game to give the Golden Grizzlies a 3-2 lead, and they led the rest of the way.

Youngstown State came closest to erasing the lead when Indiya Benjamin made a 3-point basket with 36 seconds left in the second quarter, leaving Oakland’s lead at 25-24 at halftime.

Oakland started the second half with a 6-0 run featuring two jumpers by Taylor Gleason and two free throws by Cierra Bond to lead 31-24, and Youngstown State never made another serious run.

Gleason finished with 14 points and Somerfield with 13 points and 11 rebounds for Oakland (8-5, 1-1). Nikita Telesford contributed nine points and seven rebounds.

Benjamin scored 11 for Youngstown State (5-8, 1-1).

(At) Cleveland State 75, Detroit Mercy 50: Khayla Livingston scored 26 and Olivia Voskuhl 21 for Cleveland State (10-3, 2-0 Horizon League). Nicole Urbanick and Anja Marinkovic each scored 12 for Detroit Mercy (0-13, 0-2). Urbanick’s points made her the 22nd player in school history to go over 1,000 for her career.

Kent State 67, (at) Eastern Michigan 60: Jordan Korinek scored 21 and McKenna Stephens 17 for Kent State (8-5) in the Mid-American Conference opener for both teams. Sasha Dailey and Courtnie Lews each scored 17 for Eastern (4-8).

Central Michigan 69, (at) Ball State 65: Reyna Frost scored 23, and Presley Hudson and Tinara Moore each scored 13 for Central (9-3, 1-0 MAC). Frost also had 19 rebounds and Moore 14. Moriah Monaco scored 17 for Ball State (11-1, 0-1).

(At) Western Michigan 67, Bowling Green 58: Western (8-5, 1-0 MAC) erased a 50-39 deficit after three quarters with a 28-8 edge in the fourth. Deja Wimby scored 18 and Breanna Mobley 13 with 13 rebounds for Western. Carly Santoro scored 14 for Bowling Green (8-4, 0-1).
