The Michigan men’s basketball team will get a chance to knock off the defending national champion, while Michigan State will add another potential Top 25 clash to its schedule as the pairings were announced Thursday for the Big Ten-ACC Challenge.

Michigan will face North Carolina in Chapel Hill, while Michigan State will play host to Notre Dame.

Dates and times will be announced at a later date.

The Michigan-North Carolina clash pits the Wolverines, who reached the Sweet 16 last season, against the Tar Heels, who won the national title with a 71-65 victory over Gonzaga.

Michigan is 2-3 all-time against North Carolina with each game being played at a neutral site. It’ll be the first meeting between the teams since April 5, 1993, when the Tar Heels beat the Wolverines, 77-71, in the national title game that was made famous by Chris Webber’s timeout blunder.

Michigan is 7-9 in 16 Big Ten/ACC Challenge appearances and lost to Virginia Tech, 73-70, at home in last year’s event.

North Carolina lost four of its top five scorers from last year’s title team, but returns senior guard Joel Berry II, added Pittsburgh graduate transfer Cameron Johnson and has a top-20 recruiting class.

The Michigan State-Notre Dame game could be a matchup of Top 25 teams. The Spartans generally have been ranked among the top three teams in the country in a handful of early preseason polls, while the Fighting Irish also are ranked, including No. 21 in ESPN’s early preseason poll.

Michigan State is 35-60 all-time against Notre Dame and lost the most recent meeting between the teams in overtime, 79-78, in the 2014 Challenge. It’ll be the first time the Spartans will host the Fighting Irish since Feb. 4, 1974.

Michigan State is 7-10 in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge and 6-2 when playing at the Breslin Center. The Spartans lost to Duke, 78-69, on the road in last year’s event.

Notre Dame is coming off a 26-10 season that ended with a loss to West Virginia in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Fighting Irish lost forward V.J. Beachem and guard Steve Vasturia but return two of their top scorers in forward Bonzie Colson and guard Matt Farrell.

The ACC won the Commissioner’s Cup with nine wins in last year’s Challenge. Since its inception, the ACC has won 11 Challenges and the Big Ten has won five.

Miami at Minnesota

Penn State at NC State
