Clarkston — Clarkston went on an 8-0 run in the fourth quarter to pull away from West Bloomfield and keep their undefeated season alive, 59-48, in boys basketball on Tuesday.

Leading the way for Clarkston (13-0, 5-0 OAA Red) was senior forward Dylan Alderson with 21 points, including a corner three to kick off the crucial fourth-quarter run.

“The last few minutes of that game we were finally able to set good screens and run our offense," Alderson said. "Earlier in the game we were just trying to go one-on-one and dribbling way too much. At the end of the game we got guys open, attacked the basket, rebounded and got out in transition.”

Neither team shot particularly well in the first half, but Clarkston enjoyed a 12-point lead at the break.

Clarkston’s six-foot-nine inch center, sophomore Taylor Currie, scored 10 of his 14 points in the first half, taking advantage of his height down low by converting several put-backs. Alderson also carried part of the scoring load in the first half with 11.

West Bloomfield (8-5, 3-1) came out in the third quarter shooting well. Junior guard Trey Harvey hit four threes in the second half and one in the first half, finishing with 18 points. Midway through the fourth quarter it was a six-point game.

“I think I scared the kids because our goal was to get their lead down to six by the fourth quarter,” West Bloomfield coach Jeremy Denha joked. “It was just that bad sequence."

Senior forward Kevin McAdoo was the game’s high scorer for West Bloomfield with 21, often finishing through contact after dribble-drive penetration.

“That’s just what he does," Denha said. "He finishes well with both hands. He’s just a playmaker. That’s the best kid in the state without a college scholarship offer."

Junior guard Foster Loyer, who’s committed to play for Tom Izzo at Michigan State, had 14 for Clarkston, including two clutch second-half three pointers.

He also delivered the most interesting play of the night. When inbounding the ball with only seconds left in the first quarter, Loyer threw the ball off a West Bloomfield player’s back, caught it and floated the ball up and in right at the buzzer, getting Clarkston’s fans on their feet.

The 11-point win keeps Clarkston’s undefeated season alive, but Clarkston coach Dan Fife still thinks his team has work to do in order to make a long run in the state playoffs.

“We really dodged a bullet," Fife said. "We might have dodged a machine gun. Ultimately you have to be strong mentally. With the kind of reputation we’re getting right now, there’s a bullseye on our back.”

West Bloomfield plays at home on Friday against Southfield A&T.

Clarkston plays at home on Monday against Wayne Memorial.
