Wayne — Canton put on a strong defensive effort Friday night and ran KLAA defending champion Wayne Memorial out of its own gym, coming away with a dominating 71-44 victory.

Chase Meredith, a 6-foot-7 senior, set the tempo by putting on a highlight reel first quarter, scoring 11 of his 19 points to help Canton (9-0, 5-0 KLAA Black) take a commanding 22-8 lead.

Meredith scored inside off multiple post moves, scored in transition and even made a 3-pointer as time expired in the quarter.

Canton came out with tremendous energy and played physical after suffering two close losses to Wayne (6-2, 4-1) last season, grabbing six offensive rebounds in the opening quarter.

“Last year we lost a couple of close games to them so we knew going into this game there was a little revenge,” said Meredith, who made 9-of-11 shots from the field and also grabbed 10 rebounds. “We knew we had to come out with some energy to get the win. We got off to a good lead, then stayed calm (in the second half). We did a good job of rebounding, then found the open man and made good passes (for transition baskets).”

Canton 5-9 junior guard Vinson Sigmon showed his tremendous athleticism, giving up several inches to Cleveland State-bound guard Rashad Williams, but shutting down the high-scoring guard.

Williams, who entered the night averaging 20.8 points and coming off a 37-point effort in a win over Westland John Glenn was limited to 15 points on 5-of-22 shooting, including 2-of-9 from deep range.

“I tried to stay close to him, tried to play fullcourt, 94-feet on him and that made it easier for me,” Sigmon said. “We have eight returners from last year and before the game we talked about how strong we had to come out so we came out with a lot of energy and played with a sense of urgency and it paid off in the end.”

Sigmon put on a show offensively, scoring a game-high 26, including 20 during the second half when Canton limited Wayne to one shot and consistently scored off transition baskets.

“We take pride in defending and rebounding,” said Canton ninth-year coach Jimmy Reddy. “Vince is our best two-way player and Vince made it hard on him (Williams). We weren’t going to give him space. He’s a great shooter and it was a collective group effort, put help on him as well. We just had a good night tonight.”

Elan Barker scored 11 for Canton.
