Charter One awarded $60,000 in grants Tuesday to 32 food-related small businesses that sell at Eastern Market.

The grants were made through the bank's Growing Communities program, which focuses on urban development, job creation and reinvigorating neighborhoods. The grants, made in partnership with the Eastern Market Corporation, are for new equipment or other items intended to help the businesses expand or become more efficient.

"Charter One is committed to Detroit and all of Michigan, and we believe there is an excellent economic upside to cultivating and encouraging the local food industry," Rick Hampson, president of Charter One and Citizens Commercial Banking in Michigan, said in a statement. "These grants from Charter One to these food-related entrepreneurs in Southeast Michigan can make a big difference in helping enterprises grow and create jobs."

Dan Carmody, president of Eastern Market Corporation, said the grants were a way for the market to diversify.

"These grants are going to people who are operating small food-related businesses and enterprises," he said. "Encouraging these entrepreneurs makes sense on many levels. Growing the local food industry here means more jobs for Detroit residents."

Carol and Henry Kolbuch of Uncle Henry's Gourmet Meats have been selling at Eastern Market for about five years. The Troy-based company received a grant to purchase a refrigerated display case. Although it's not a very glamorous request, the case will help them expand their business, said Carol Kolbuch.

"It will help us to display our products better when we're here on eastern market on Saturday and get us out there better," she said.
