Meijer to hire 270 for new west Detroit store

Staff and wire reports

Big box retailer Meijer is seeking 270 employees for its soon-to-open store in west Detroit, the Grand Rapids-based company said Tuesday.

Also Tuesday, Huntington Bank announced it would open full-service branches in 43 Michigan Meijer stores, adding 250 jobs statewide.

Meijer has begun accepting online applications for more than 270 positions at its new Detroit store — its second in the city — which is scheduled to open early this summer. Jobs include clerks and cake decorators to customer service workers, cashiers, receiving department employees and meat cutters. Starting pay will be based on experience level and specific skills.

Potential candidates are required to begin the hiring process by applying online at http://jobs.meijer.com/newstore. Enter “Detroit” in the location search field at the top of page and click “Search.” Hourly candidates will find positions by clicking the NEW STORE MEIJER Opening Soon in Detroit posting. Descriptions for the available positions will be outlined within the posting.

With the additions at Meijer stores announced Tuesday, Huntington Bank will have 2,300 employees in Michigan. The expansion by Columbus, Ohio-based Huntington Bancshares Inc. will mean Huntington Bank has more than 220 Huntington branches in Michigan.

Huntington’s branches at Grand Rapids-based Meijer stores also include 24-hour access ATMs. Extended hours offer banking in the evening and on weekends.

Meijer operates more than 200 supercenters and grocery stores throughout Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky.
